Sexual Abuse
The art world is becoming one of the main supporters of donating to important causes that will contribute to society. Art galleries centering new collections around sexual abuse and its effects are opening eyes across the United States. Since art is one of the most diversified method of reaching large amounts of people, it is inspirational to see art galleries stepping into the shoes of role models and supporting a cause which affects a myriad of people daily.
Sexual abuse can range from inappropriate sexual comments in the workplace to human trafficking for the purpose of sexual acts. From large to small scale, sexual abuse leaves its victims with scars that are present for life. It is hard to forget once being in a situation in which someone is abused. Since sexual abuse is a difficult type of trauma to cure, it needs extra attention from medical staff and victims alike.
Sexual abuse is a problem whose size is seriously underestimated, due to the fact that many operations which are considered abuse are secret and done in ways which are not exposed to the public. In fact, even the movies (like Taken) which provide insight to the problem can be inaccurate or depict the problem in a wrong way. Because these operation of this severity are carefully planned and executed, it is hard to imagine how a human trafficking operations works. Perhaps part of the problem is that many law officials could not imagine inflicting such pain on another human being, while criminals who practice sexual abuse don’t think twice about the consequences there actions bare.
The interesting thing about sexual abuse is that even political figures (presidents, mayors, etc) are being exposed for the act. From supporting human trafficking to the abuse of a coworker, even political figures are found guilty of these crimes. It is scary to think that individuals that are trusted to make decisions that affect society as citizens know it are only human, and are capable of inflicting sexual abuse on a familiar individual.
For these reasons, art galleries should be applauded for the service they are doing to mankind. By exposing the evils in society, art galleries are able to create a reputation of goodwill and attract more visitors, which serve almost as a mutually beneficial deal for both the art gallery as a provider and visitors as students. Art galleries recognize this relationship with the public, therefore putting themselves on the map for supporting education.
All in all, the benefits art galleries provide visitors and victims of sexual abuse are astronomical. Sexual abuse victims are able to release tension and hidden emotions through the creation of artwork, while art galleries contribute by way of accepting these works to display them and make the public aware of the problem. Public awareness and art gallery awareness by way of therapy are two contributions which will hopefully help sexual abuse cease as the serious problem it is in today’s society. It is these art galleries that give educational and therapeutic efforts new heights.
